Reflecting with poise, humor, and emotion, to the issues on adoption

Janet, Katie and I–and Adam Pertman, the adoption guru moderator–are getting ready to appear onstage at the intimate 200 seat Soho Playhouse, to launch At The Heart of the Universe!  We had done a trial run of this in Boston, in front of an audience, and it was truly remarkable.  Not only did my brief readings from the novel meet with a hush–and when appropriate–laughing response, but in the Q and A, most of the questions went to Katie, our now 25 year old.  Although she had never really talked about these issues, there she was, no longer a girl, but a young woman, reflecting with poise, humor, depth, and emotion, to the issues on adoption.  By the end, there were a lot of tears in the audience, and onstage.

And then she gave Janet and me the most wonderful gift: turning to us, she said,

“You two  did a pretty good job.”

Any parent knows how deeply touching this is.
